Cause

If a client’s connection to the server is lost or gets closed abnormally, then the next time the client re-attempts an incremental backup it will get an error message from the server saying “backup in progress.” This loss of connection is sometimes not detected by the backup server, which continues processing the earlier aborted incremental backup session.

Solution

For another incremental backup to successfully proceed, restart the backup server.
