Normally this issue would occur in VMware ESXi 5.5.x machines as there is a known issue in enabling CBT. The same has been explained in the VMware KB article.


To resolve this issue do follow the instruction given in the link above and reset the CBT value by editing the VMX file of the guest VM that you are trying to backup. After resetting the CBT, run the backup job and see the results
