What is checkpoint

You can create checkpoints in Hyper-V to save the state of the machine. A checkpoint is a snapshot of the state of the VM and it gives you a way to rollback the VM to a previous state.

Steps to delete a checkpoint

  1. In Hyper-V Manager, select the virtual machine.

  2. In the Checkpoints section, right-click the checkpoint that you want to delete and click Delete.

  3. To delete a checkpoint and all subsequent checkpoints, right-click the earliest checkpoint, and then click Delete Checkpoint Subtree.

  4. Agree to the Delete Confirmation dialog box and then click Delete.

  5. It is preferable to restart the VM after deleting the checkpoint.

[Note: The “Delete” action cannot be reversed]

With respect to Vembu BDR Suite if you are deleting a checkpoint because backups are failing, then please note the following:

  1. Backups of Hyper-V VMs with checkpoints are supported for Windows Server 2016 & above and if you are using Vembu BDR Suite v4.1.0 and above.

  2. For successful backup with checkpoints:

    • Upgrade Vembu BDR Backup Server to version 4.1.0 or above using the Vembu Software Update Guide
    • Upgrade your Windows Hyper-V Machine (the host being backed up) to the Windows Server 2016 or above
