Vembu Backup & Replication for VMware leverages VMware snapshot technology to backup and replicate VMware virtual machines. This error occurs while creating the snapshot for the VMs configured for the backup or replication. Along with the error message, the exact reason for failure is also shown.

The most common reasons for this error can be any of the following:

  1. The size of the snapshot file created is larger than the available free space in the datastore where the VM is located.

  2. The VMware Tools installed in the guest VM is not up to date.

  3. The VM's virtual disk is locked.

  4. The VM requires snapshot consolidation

  5. There is an error while quiescing the VM.

  6. The snapshot count for the VM has reached the maximum value. A maximum of 32 snapshots is supported by VMware.

All of these causes are specific to the VMware snapshot creation. VMware has already provided the necessary steps for troubleshooting in their knowledge base section.

Below you can find the links to VMware’s knowledge base section for each of the above-mentioned causes.

1) If the file size is larger than the maximum supported size, refer to VMware KB article

2) If the VMware Tools is not up to date, refer to VMware KB article

3) If the VM's virtual disk is locked, refer to VMware KB article

4) If the VM requires snapshot consolidation, refer to VMware KB article

5) If there is an error in quiescing the snapshot of the VM, refer to Vembu KB article

6) If the snapshot count has reached the maximum value, refer to VMware KB article

Once you fix the issue with the solution mentioned in the above KB articles, snapshot creation can be tested manually.

Steps to create a manual snapshot:

  1. On your ESXi host, search for the VM that you have configured for backup.
  2. Right-click the VM, and click on Snapshot > Take Snapshot.
  3. Enter a Name and Description for the snapshot and select the checkbox ‘Quiesce guest file system (needs VMware tools installed)’, as it is advisable to quiesce the VM (for application consistency) while taking the snapshot.
  4. Then Click Take Snapshot.

If you can create a manual snapshot, but still the backups are failing, please contact Vembu support at vembu-support@vembu.com with the screenshot of the error message and log files of Vembu BDR Backup Server
