This alert usually throws if “VSS service is disabled” in Hyper-V host machine. To fix this, please follow the steps provided in the below solution.


  • Go to Services.msc in the Hyper-V host machine
  • Search for Volume Shadow Copy Service and find the status of the service
  • If the Service is disabled or stopped, Start the service and continue with the backup.
  • Or To do this in the command prompt, open an elevated command prompt window and run the following commands:

    net stop vss
    net start vss

There are many factors that would cause the snapshot failure of a Hyper-V VM. The following are the other most frequent reasons for snapshot failures:

Alert: SNAPSHOT_FAILURE Snapshot Creation failed while DoSnapshotSet call

Alert: SNAPSHOT_FAILURE - Hyper-V VSS Writer is not in stable state, Reschedule backup in few minutes

Alert: Snapshot failure: Could not fetch VM status

Alert: SNAPSHOT_FAILURE Snapshot initialization failed, as volume could not be added to snapshot set

Alert: SNAPSHOT_FAILURE Snapshot initialization failed while StartSnapshotSet
