Cause:

Hyper-V backup will show the above error message for the below reasons:

  • If the VM configured for backup doesn’t have any disks attached to it.
  • If PSRemoting disabled in Hyper-V host
  • If the target host is not reachable.
  • If WinRM service is stopped or disabled in Hyper-v host.
  • If the Firewall enabled in the target host.

Solution:

To resolve this issue, please follow the below steps:

  • Check whether the VM has any disks(vhd/vhdx) attached to it.
  • Check whether Hyper-V host is reachable.
  • To start WinRM service, In target host:

      Go to run -> services -> check for WinRM service.
      If it is in stop-state then start it manually [right click-> start]
    
  • To enable PSRemoting:

      Open Windows Powershell
      Execute this command "Enable-PSRemoting"
    
  • To Bypass Firewall to enable WMI connections to Host, Do the following

      Open Windows Firewall -> Advanced Settings 
      In Inbound Rules -> Enable “Windows Remote Management(HTTP-In)” for both Domain & Public Profile
