This error occurs when a Hyper-V VM configured for backup has checkpoints.

When is it Applicable

  1. If you are using Windows 2012 R2 or below version.
  2. If you are using Vembu BDR Suite 4.0.2 & below.

[Note: Backups of Hyper-V VMs with checkpoints are supported for Windows Server 2016 & above and if you are using Vembu BDR Suite 4.1.0 and above.]


For successful backup in Hyper-V VM with checkpoints follow one of the solutions below:

Solution 1:

  1. Upgrade Vembu BDR Backup Server to version 4.1.0 or above. Refer to the Vembu Software Update Guide for more details.

  2. Upgrade your Windows Hyper-V Machine (the host being backed up) to the Windows 2016 and above.

Solution 2:

Follow the steps below to delete the checkpoints.

  1. In Hyper-V Manager, select the virtual machine.

  2. In the Checkpoints section, right-click the checkpoint that you want to delete and click Delete.

  3. To delete a checkpoint and all subsequent checkpoints, right-click the earliest checkpoint, and then click Delete Checkpoint Subtree.

  4. Agree to the Delete Confirmation dialog box and then click Delete.

  5. Once the checkpoints are deleted, the backups job will continue as scheduled or you can manually click on the “Run now” option to run the backup job immediately.

  6. It is preferable to restart the VM after deleting the checkpoint.

[Note: The “Delete” action cannot be reversed.]
