Thanks for the update. We will shortly update our KB article with the solution and will post the link here.

2019-01-03 11:26:39 -0600 answered a question Unable to reinstall client integration tools after V4 Free Edition

Thanks for pointing out the spelling mistake. We will correct it in our upcoming minor update.

To uninstall the Vembu Integration Service, you can log in to the Hyper-V host machine and uninstall the VIS from ‘Uninstall a program’ window. This will remove the VIS from the Hyper-V host.

However, If you could see this error after the uninstallation, I think there might be a few entries were not properly removed from the Hyper-V host machine.

So, to resolve this issue, log in to the Hyper-V host machine and check whether the Vembu Integration Service is listed in either the registry or services.msc. If it is listed, you can remove it manually by following the steps given below,

To remove the service, open command prompt with administrator privilege and run 'SC DELETE VembuIntegrationService'

Open the registry and check for the registry value for 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Vembu\VembuIntegrationService' and delete it manually.

Then add the Hyper-V host from the BDR backup server.

2019-01-03 10:42:11 -0600 answered a question Can Vembu supports storage to Rackspace (Cloud storage Provider) ?

We haven't tested Vembu BDR with Wasabi Cloud Storage as a primary storage target. However, from their documentation, it seems they are providing direct connect option and if it will able to take care of porting the data to their cloud storage, you can use this option to set up the Wasabi Cloud Storage as a primary storage target. However, we recommend you to test the backup and recovery functionalities.

2018-12-29 09:00:56 -0600 answered a question Still can't backup with checkpoint removed

Check the data storage location of the VM and make sure there are no *.avhd files. If there are any *.avhd files, you can merge them to the *.vhd file. Then run the incremental backup.

If this is not the case, you can send the log files to our support team at vembu-support@vembu.com. Our support team will check the log file and help you to resolve this issue.

1.Send the zip of log folder from the VembuBDR backup server installation location,

Example: "C:\Program Files\Vembu\VembuBDR\log"

2.Also, send the zip of log folder from the Hyper-V Host,

Location: "C:\Program Files\Vembu\VembuIntegrationService\log".

2018-12-07 07:34:07 -0600 answered a question Proceed Ack Failed

This error message "Proceed Ack failed" will occur if the client doesn't receive the initial handshake ack from the backup server within the stipulated time. By default, it will wait for 1800 secs [30 mins]. The other possible reason for this issue might be,

1) Failed to access the storage repository location in the backup server.

2) Failed to access the backend database.

3) The return ack might be dropped due to a transient network problem, which might be resolved automatically in the next schedule. Please check whether the issue gets resolved in the next consecutive schedule.

However, to identify the exact root cause of the issue in your environment, we need to check the log files. So, send the zip of the log folder(VembuBDRInstallation>\log) to vembu support at vembu-support@vembu.com.

2018-12-07 07:22:02 -0600 answered a question connection refused by the server.

The NetworkBackup agent initiates the connectivity and send the backup data through 32004 port to the BDR backup server and if it is blocked by the firewall of the client or the BDR backup server machine, you will get this issue. Refer to this KB article to resolve the issue.

2018-11-01 10:31:06 -0600 answered a question Cannot Add Proxy Details

Sorry for the confusion. Earlier, I had mentioned that the ProxyIP should be entered as --Proxy_IP and --ProxyPort as --Proxy_Port. Also, the exe name is VembuProxycfg.exe.

For example, you need to run the exe with the parameters as mentioned below in the command prompt,

VembuProxycfg.exe --Proxy_IP=10.0.0.1 --Proxy_Port=100

The text editor in the forum didn't show the _ earlier. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Hi Stoo,

Thank you for letting us know. I am glad that the backup server is up and running again. Yes, send us the log files to our support team to identify the exact issue and fix it permanently.

2018-11-01 10:02:40 -0600 answered a question Cannot Add Proxy Details

It seems you have entered the wrong arguments. You need to enter the --ProxyIP as --Proxy_IP and --ProxyPort as --Proxy_Port. Also, do not provide space after the "=".

For example, VembuProxycfg.exe --Proxy_IP=10.0.0.1 --Proxy_Port=100

2018-10-11 09:17:18 -0600 answered a question License tracking

The BDR backup server validates the licenses information with Vembu Portal periodically. Our licensing is based on Per CPU Socket/VM for Virtual Environment and Per machine/application for the physical environment. So, we send the above information to our portal server over HTTPS to validate the license information.

2018-09-17 11:25:06 -0600 answered a question Backup fails due to virtual drive mount

It seems the installer unable to access few files inside the Vembu BDR backup server installation location. So, run the BDR installer with administrator privilege to resolve this issue.

2018-09-14 05:12:06 -0600 answered a question Backup fails due to virtual drive mount

We have fixed the backup failure issue due to the virtual drive mount in our current version 3.9.1. So, if your BDR backup server is running in a lower version, I recommend you to upgrade your BDR backup server to the latest version 3.9.1. To upgrade, refer the following guide https://www.vembu.com/pdf/release-not...

2018-08-17 01:40:23 -0600 answered a question Backup Jobs Not Running Automatically

Thanks for the update.

2018-08-13 13:08:56 -0600 answered a question Backup Jobs Not Running Automatically

It seems the connectivity between the host machine and the BDR backup server is dropped. I think this might be due to below reasons,

  1. If 32004, 34005 ports are not listening in the host machines. You can check this by running following commands in the command prompt,

    netstat -an | find "32004"

    netstat -an | find "34005"

If anyone of the above services is not running, you need to start the VembuIntegrationService in services.msc.

  2. Or any change in the firewall configuration. You can check the connectivity by executing the following commands in the BDR backup server and host machines.

    a. Open the command prompt with administrator permission

    b. In BDR backup server machine: telnet host_IP 42005

    c. In Host machines: telnet BDRBackupServer_IP 32004

  3. If the IP addresses of the BDR backup server or host machine might be changed. If you have configured dynamic IP addresses for the BDR backup server machine or host machines, you need to change it to static IP address.

Once the VMDK disk is mounted to the another VM, you need to log in the VM and open the Disk Management.

Open "Run -> type diskmgmt.msc" to open the Disk Management.

You can see the attached VMDK disk and right click the disk and select the Online option to browse the folder.

2018-07-27 22:50:36 -0600 edited answer Windows XP SP3 supported?

The latest version of Vembu BDR Suite uses MSI installer for all the clients, which is not supported by Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Operating Systems. However, in your case, you can install the latest version of Vembu BDR Backup Server and use our earlier version (v3.8.0) of Vembu ImageBackup client to perform the backups for the Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP OSes.

Click here to download the Vembu ImageBackup v3.8.0 EXE Build (Only for 64-BIT Operating System)

Since the Microsoft has stopped the Support for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Operating Systems, we also stopped the support for backups from the mentioned OSes. Also, we would like to inform you that for Windows Server 2003 and XP Operating Systems, there won't be any further updates. You can perform Backups and Restores without any issues, however, if there are any issues related to Operating System, Vembu will not be responsible for the failures.

2018-07-24 12:30:49 -0600 answered a question Is there a desktop application that runs Vembu?

I think the UI hang issue might occur if you could use the unsupported version of the browser to access the BDR backup server UI. Can you check the browser version and if you are having a lower version, you may upgrade it to the latest version. Also, make sure you have the minimum RAM and CPU available in the backup server machine as per the guidelines. Click here to know about the system requirements.

Also, you may try to restart the Vembu BDR and PostgreSQL services in the BDR backup server machine and then try to access the web UI.

2018-07-23 09:56:02 -0600 answered a question Testing VembuBDR. First backup completes, second fails partially

Vembu uses its proprietary CBT driver to track the changed blocks during the incremental backup and it will continue to track the changed blocks even after rebooting the Hyper-V host or VM. So, it will not break the incremental chain.

Right now, we do not support Hyper-V cluster environment. It will be supported in our upcoming release v4.0. If you would like to test it, you can apply for the BETA program by sending an email request to our support team at vembu-support@vembu.com. They will send you the installer which supports Hyper-V cluster environment. We are planning to release it by end of August 2018.

Also, the RCT driver and Storage Space Direct will be supported in any one of our future releases after v4.0.

So, coming back the VM failure. It seems the backup failed for the VM, because we are unable to collect the changed blocks from our CBT tracking file. This would occur if the VM belongs to a Hyper-V cluster. If you would share your Hyper-V environment details, I may provide you with the exact reason for the backup failure.

2018-07-16 04:37:07 -0600 answered a question RHEV Support

Vembu ImageBackup agent needs to be installed on each Windows VM to backup the RHEV VMs. The ImageBackup agent will backup entire VM data including OS, application, and data.

LAN-Free Backup Support for NetApp?

We are planning to support storage snapshot level backup for NetApp and this will be available for production use by end of this year. However, we considered this feature for VMware and Hyper-V hypervisors.

Also file-level recovery option available?

Yes. You can restore individual files without restoring the entire VM.

Are there any datastore limitations? We use FC SAN for Virtualization Hosts and Self-hosted Engine.

Since the ImageBackup agent is installed inside the VM, it supports all types of datastores.

2018-06-24 21:35:21 -0600 answered a question i cant backup windows server from azure to external vm in aws

Vembu uses port number 42005, 34005 for UI communication and 32004 for backup communication. So, can you check both the port numbers are reachable from the BDR backup server machine hosted in AWS? This should be added in the exception list of both the Windows firewall, AWS network security and Azure VM network security group. Find all the ports numbers used by Vembu here.

Further to this, you need to make sure you have enough bandwidth to backup the entire machine from Azure to AWS Instance. If there will be any network interruption, the full backup will start from scratch. After the initial full backup, during the incremental backup, Vembu ImageBackup will transfer only the changed blocks.

Also, you may use Vembu ImageBackup agent and install it directly to Azure VM and configure the image backup to AWS instance.

2018-06-19 04:27:09 -0600 answered a question Can I save my VMs into Hubic Cloud Server?

Further to Nivas's update, we have found that few temp files(.wrk and *.lst) have been skipped while copying the entire 'sgstorage' folder. These are all temp files and it will be removed once the transaction gets completed. So, while copying the data, these files might be reported as unavailable or inaccessible. You can ignore this and this will not cause any issue.

2018-06-18 10:45:30 -0600 answered a question Quick VM Recovery to Hyper-V

Based on the source machine type, the G1 or G2 VM will be created on Hyper-V while instantly booting the backed up physical and virtual machines. I think you might be having GPT partition in the Windows 7 machine. Hence, Vembu BDR backup server had created the G2 VM. But you can test the instant boot by creating a new G1 VM manually by selecting the VHD file instead of VHDX. You can find the VHD, VHDX, VMDK and IMG image files in Vembu Virtual Drive (D:\VembuVirtualDrive). These virtual image files are virtually created by Vembu BDR for all the backed up physical and virtual machines without using any disk space.

2018-06-16 23:59:57 -0600 answered a question Server deactivation

Normally, the BDR backup server communicates with the Vembu Portal once in every 24 hours. If the BDR backup server unable to connect the Vembu Portal, it will be deactivated after 7 days. So, check the internet connectivity in the BDR backup server machine and run the license check again. If this is not the problem, share us the screenshot of the exact error message shown while clicking the "Run License Check" button in "Management > Server Management > Server Registration" page.

2018-06-15 12:02:12 -0600 answered a question Vembu BDR Suite - License update failure

The BDR backup server is communicating with the Vembu Portal securely through HTTPS. However, we understand your concern and we have already included the offline license validation concept in our future roadmap. It will be available in one of our upcoming releases.

If you have erased the backup job, probably the backed up data also will be removed from the storage target. However, if the backed up data is available in the storage target as you have mentioned earlier, you can recreate the backup job by following the below steps,

  1. Stop the Vembu BDR service.
  2. Open the command prompt with administrator privileges.
  3. Goto BDR installation location. Default installation location, "C:\Program Files\Vembu\VembuBDR".
  4. Execute the following command,

      bin\VembuBDR.exe CheckAndUpdateDB All ChunkEntryRefill

Wait until the rebuilding process gets complete.

  5. Start the Vembu BDR service.

2018-05-29 02:53:57 -0600 answered a question Possible to backup Windows Guest with RDM (MCS service) on ESXi hosts

Yes, Vembu provides ImageBackup agent to backup the Windows VMs having any pass-through disks(including MCS). Normally, backing up the VMs having physical RDMs or any pass-through disks using the VMware VM-level backup is not possible. So, you need to install the Vembu ImageBackup agent inside the VM and backup the entire machine including the pass-through disks. During any disaster, you can instantly boot this backed up VM in VMware and you can instantly restore the individual files, application items. Refer this user guide for more clarification.

2018-05-03 10:56:23 -0600 edited answer Restore version options

The letter "d" besides the restore point denotes it is a Daily Merged Recovery point. Similarly, the letter "W" and "M" denotes Weekly and Monthly Merged Recovery points respectively. Also, the letter "P" denotes, the particular restore point contains some persistent boot changes.

If you have configured hourly incremental backups, on the third day, after the first successful incremental backup, all the hourly incremental backups of the first day will be merged together to form a single daily merged recovery point, which is denoted by the letter "d" and it continues for the successive days.

If you configured backups using advanced retention policies(GFS retention), all the daily merged recovery points of the particular week will be merged together to form a single weekly merged recovery point, which is denoted by the letter "w"(Only if you are configured weekly merge).

Similarly, all the weekly merged recovery points of the particular month will be merged together to form a single monthly merged recovery point, which is denoted by the letter "m"(Only if you are configured monthly merge).
