Further to our previous reply, we are able to reproduce similar issue, if the directory path entry in /etc/fstab ends with slash character.

For eg,

[ below entry working ]

/dev/sdb1 /mnt/storage ext4 defaults 1 2

[ below entry not working - path ends with / ]

/dev/sdb1 /mnt/storage/ ext4 defaults 1 2

Can you confirm whether this is the reason for the issue in your environment. If so, for now please modify the fstab entry (without ends with slash) and update us whether its working or not. We will handle this case in our 3.9 Update1 release (immediate patch update) which is expected to be released by the end of this week.

We need the dump of the database to find the name of the Backup Job on which you enable Full Featured Free Edition.

1.If you are running Vembu BDR Suite v3.9.0, Use the below command to create dump the main database and send the same to vembu-support@vembu.com.

pgdump.exe -b -U < UserName > -n public -f < OutputFile_Name > < DatabaseName >

For Example: C:\Program Files\PostgreSQL\9.6\bin>pg_dump.exe -b -U postgres -n public -f "C:\PgDumpNew.sql" SGDatabase

You can find the details of UserName, DatabaseName and Password at the Database tag of SGConfiguration.conf file (< Installation location >/conf/SGConfiguration.conf)

2.If you are running Vembu BDR Suite v3.8.0, please send the zip of sgclient.db file to us at vembu-support@vembu.com

You can find sgclient.db file at C:\Program Files\Vembu\VembuBDR\data\sgclient.db

From the logs, we believe, there is be a permission issue in reading the WriterStatus file within the Guest VM.

Please follow the below steps, which would help us to analyze the case.

  1. Login to your Guest VM with any administrator account.
  2. open "gpedit.msc" from Run.
  3. Navigate to "Computer Configuration" --> "Windows Settings" --> "Security Settings" --> "Local Policies" --> "Security Options".

Navigate to the end of the security options and search for "User Account Control". Provide us a screenshot of all User Account Control Policies with the security settings. In addition, please send us the OS details of the Guest VM.

Hi,

The specified error will occur, if we are unable to get the writer status from the particular VM machine. Can you please run VembuBDR in administrator command prompt and trigger the backup then send us the log prints. In order to run BDR in command prompt follow the below steps.

  1. Stop VembuBDR from services.
  2. Open command prompt (as administrator) and navigate to VembuBDR installation location say, cd C:\Program Files\Vembu\VembuBDR
  3. Run VembuBDR by running the below command, bin\VembuBDR.exe > SGOutput.txt

Now run the backup in which you are getting the error - Failed to download WriterStatusFile from guest machine. Once you receive the error, please send us the below details.

1) content of BDRINSTALLLOCATION\SGOutput.txt

2) content of BDRINSTALLLOCATION\log\vsphere.log

3) content of BDRINSTALLLOCATION\log\Backup_Name\vsphere.log

The above will help us to analyze the issue further.

Hi,

Normally this error will occur if we are unable to connect to the given ServerName/IP Address.

In order to analyze the issue can you please send us the below details.

1) Output of the following command,

net use \\GIVENSERVERNAME or IPADDRESS\admin$

say for eg, net use \\192.168.1.15\admin$

2) Are you trying to add Windows Server in the same machine (same Windows 2012 R2)? If yes, please try to give ServerName as 'localhost' while adding the host and let us know the result.

3) If you are trying to add a different Desktop OS machine as the Server, please install the VembuIntegrationService MSI manually in the desktop machine and then try to add the same machine in Vembu BDR Server. You can get the VembuIntegrationService MSI inside the <bdr_installation_path>\Packages\Client folder. Then let us know the results.

Hi,

The PostgreSQL server database contains the agent/backup related information as well as meta-data information of the backed-up data, which is needed for recovery process. The size of the PostgreSQL Data folder can vary depends upon the size of the total backup data stored in the backup server. The approximate database size may be around 1% of total backed-up data size. So when the backed up data size grows, the database size will also grow up accordingly and it can't be shrinked.

If the database is getting bigger and if you don't have enough space on the drive, you can move the postgres db location to a different drive which has enough space, by following the below KB article,

Regarding your query, we would like to inform you that currently it is not possible to add Tape Drives as Backup Storage Repository. However, if you are using Vembu OffsiteDR, you can add Tape Drives as your Backup Storage Repository for your Offsite copies. We are currently working on tape drive support, where you can configure tape drive as a secondary storage for your Backup Server / OffsiteDR data for archival purpose.

Also, for the Support of Tape Drives, the build is currently in testing phase and hence please email to vembu-support@vembu.com so that our support team can check for a feasibility and provide you with a beta build for testing purposes.

From your post, we believe that you are facing issues in backing up virtual machines which belongs to ESXi 6.0 Free version. Please note that, Vembu VMBackup does not support free version of ESXi. Vembu is using advanced VMware vStorage APIs for Data Protection and the API is a licensed VMware feature. Therefore, backups using these APIs are restricted at the VMware service end.

So, in order to backup the specific VMs, either you have to upgrade to a paid ESXi version and configure VMware Backups (or) you have to install Vembu ImageBackup client (can be downloaded from BDR Server console itself) in the specific VM and configure Disk Image backups.

We have tried from our end and we are able to download the Linux builds with out any issue for our OnlineBackup test accounts. Please note that, for each customer, client build is unique and so you have to login to the account and then download your client build. If you face any issue in downloading, please post the exact error message displayed in the webconsole, so that we can help you to resolve the issue.

Thanks for your update and we understand your requirement. Normally for image backups, we are suggesting to deploy the backup server locally, so we thought, there is no need of Seed. And as you said, when there is a large amount of data, then its good to have a seed option to avoid backups through network. We already have this Seed option in our Vembu NetworkBackup product (for Files & Applications). We will try to integrate the same feature in our VMBackup and ImageBackup products as well in our upcoming releases ASAP.

Hi Mike, You can change the dump location for the existing backup by executing few SQL queries and then configuring additional full backup for that schedule before continue with the incremental backups. So that you can restore the previous full backup whenever it requires. Further to our previous post, currently we are working on Disk Image Backup support for Windows 8 and above Desktop OSes. And it will be available in our v3.6 release which is expected to be released by the end of Aug 2016.

For now, you can use our Vembu ImageBackup client to perform Disk Image backups for the following OSes,

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 / 2012 / 2008 R2
  • Windows 2008 SP2 / 2003 SP2 & later
  • Windows SBS 2011 / 2008 / 2003

Vembu BDR uses 32004 port for backup communication and it will be in listen mode while the application is running. You can run 'netstat -an|find "32004" (for Windows) or netstat -an|grep 32004 (for Linux)' on command prompt to check the health status of the Vembu BDR application.

Hi,

The snapshots taken by Vembu BDR Client during full backup and each incremental backup jobs will be deleted at the end of backup job. Vembu BDR will not retain any snapshots after backup process. And regarding incremental backup, please note that, Vembu BDR uses VMware vStorage API to backup the selected virtual machines and it provides ability to track changed blocks during each incremental backup. By using that, we are able to identify the modified blocks from the previous schedule and transfer only the incremental content to the backup server.
