The Vmware backup at our data center fails with the error message "Failed to create snapshot for <vmname>, error -3960 (cannot quiesce virtual machine)". What is the cause of this issue and how to fix it ?
This is a known issue with VSS application snapshots which is not caused by VembuBDR client instance or the VMware software. It affects ESXi/ESX 4.1 and later versions. As per VMware Knowledge base article Currently, there is no resolution for this issue.
To work around this issue, disable VSS quiesced application-based snapshots and revert to file system quiesced snapshots. You can disable VSS applications quiescing with either the VMware vSphere Client or with VMware Tools. Please refer the VMware kb article for further details on disabling the VSS applications quiescing with either the VMware vSphere Client or with VMware Tools.
The things that confirms the "Cannot take a quiesced snapshot " issue are mentioned below. Please check the same and fix the backup failure issue as mentioned above.
"Failed to create snapshot for <vmname>, error -3960 (cannot quiesce virtual machine)" Cloning a Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine will fail.
Note : This issue will occur mostly on the windows 2008 R2 server VM environment.
In the Application section of the Event Viewer in the problematic virtual machine, you can see the following below error message reported by Windows guest operating system
"Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine IOCTL_DISK_SET_SNAPSHOT_INFO(\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE1) fails with winerror 1168. hr = 0x80070490, Element not found."
