Backing up a Windows Server with Hyper-V Role and live Domain Controller VM

Hi, This is a physical server Windows 2019 standard with Hyper-V role running a live Domain Controller VM. We use a licensed version of Backup for Microsoft Windows to backup this entire server. My questions are: Is Vembu Backup for Microsoft Windows Hyper-V VM aware ? During backup could the VM be disrupted? Does the backup support a VM only restore?

On a side note: All our production VMs run in a Hyper-V cluster including another DC, we needed a standalone DC outside of the cluster to allow the cluster to come up after shutdown.

Backup for Microsoft Windows is not Hyper-V VMs aware. As BDRSuite leverages volume-based snapshots for the volumes configured for the backup, it does not disturb or affect the performance of the VMs hosted in the Hyper-V. Also, it does not support VM level restore. Even if you granularly recover the virtual disk of the Hyper-V VMs, it may not be in a consistent state.

It is always recommended to backup the Hyper-V VMs at VM level using Backup & Replication for Hyper-V. Hyper-V VM backups are application-aware, which checks for the consistency of the Microsoft application such as Exchange, SQL, SharePoint & AD and takes a consistent backup.

If something goes wrong, you can get instant access to the backup VMs by booting them as a VM on any hypervisors of your choice. You can also granularly recover the files & folder or application items of Exchange, SQL, SharePoint & AD from the backup data.
