If I backup 10 Linux machines totaling 400GB, how much disk space should the Backup Server use up?
I am seeing 400GB used, which indicates Deduplication is not working.
I have used other Dedup products, and have not seen this behavior.
Please explain what is going in here?
Only the original size of the data(source data), which has been backed up is displayed the UI of the Vembu BDR Server. However, the data gets stored on the backup storage repository after compression and deduplication.
All your backup data will get stored in the sgstorage folder of the configured backup storage repository. If you go and check the properties of the sgstorage folder, you can find the actual space used by the backup data in the storage repository.
If it is a physical volume, you can find the sgstorage folder immediately after opening the configured drive. If it is a network volume, you have to navigate to the configured storage path to find the sgstorage folder.
My File system is around 10TB, and now I've got around 1.7TB left, which indicates that Deduplicaiton is not working, or not working the way I would expect it to work comparing it to other products I've used.
How is deduplication working? If I create 5 backups of 1TB each at the source, with minimal changes to the 10 VMs between each backup. Would the whole 5 sets of backups be deduplicated as 1 whole or would the system store 5 backups individually deuplicated?
So less than 1TB File system used, or 5 x the amount because each backup is treated individually.
As a real life example: On the file system for my daily backup for 2 days I can see 2 x 480GB folders, I would have expected the total to be around 500GB (with deduplication and any changes afer 1 day). Instead, I can see multiple folders (1 for each day) at around 480GB.
The data reduction with Vembu applies to individual backup jobs, not as a whole. It is specific to the particular backup chain (full backup and incremental). If a new full backup gets scheduled, the older backup chain will reset and starts a new backup chain.
As per the design, a new folder gets created on the backup storage repository for every full backup, and the successive incremental will also get stored in the same folder.
Since you are using Vembu BDR Suite free edition, only the full backup will run on the selected backup interval, and that's the reason you are seeing a new folder created every day on the backup storage repository.
Vembu leverages variable-length inline deduplication. The data reduction rate depends on the size of the free RAM. Higher the size of free RAM, the higher the rate of data reduction.
