For the life of me I can not do a restore of a windows image backup to a quick VM or anything that is a full live restore. I almost get it to work but then they freeze or end up in an endless reboot.
To simplify...my needs. I want to take a backup of a physical windows machine and have the option to have a fully restorable virtual machine for disaster recovery or even as a replacement of the physical machine.
You can restore your backed-up physical machine as VM or a new physical machine using the following recovery options:
Quick VM Recovery:
Instantly restore the backed-up machine as a new VM on a target ESXi host. This is a temporary option targeted to reduce downtime.
Download:
a) Download your backup disk into flat.VMDK format and use this image file to migrate your Windows machine to VMware environment permanently
b) Perform bare metal recovery by downloading the backup data into VHD format and use Vembu Recovery CD to restore the data in another physical machine.

Right now, initiating the P2V needs few manual steps and in any of our future releases, we plan to automate this process.
Steps to perform bare-metal restore to a physical machine is common across all backup software. You need the backup data as an image file or any proprietary format and the iso file to perform the bare metal restore.
So, you need to follow the given steps:
1) Create the Recovery CD
2) Download the backed up data into the VHD image file
3) Initiate bare-metal recovery
Just follow the above 3 steps to recover the backup data to a physical machine.
