Question about Retention

Hello.

I am using Vembu Bdr backup for my Vmware infrastructure. I am running a daily incremental backup plan with basic retention and keep last 5 daily merged recovery points. I am notice that the backup storage always increased and all incremental backup stored and not deleted after 5 days. The result is after some day the backup pool running out of space and backup plan stops.

I want to make a plan that keep only the last 5 days and not storage only growing up. Is it something that I made wrong with the plan or have I understand wrong how the retention works?

During the retention process, we will merge the incremental and mark the non-unique blocks present in the older incremental schedule as deleted. And the same will get removed during the vacuum process (post-process run in the backend).

So, in your case when the 6th daily merged recovery point is created, the first daily merge recovery point should get removed from the storage.

I think it would better if you can send the screenshot of the expanded backup report and the log files to our support team at vembu-support@vembu.com to analyze the exact reason for the over-usage of your storage repository. Mention this community ticket in the subject.

You can find the log folder of the Vembu BDR Server on the backup server machine at < installation location >\vembu\vembuBDR\log.

You can find the Backup Report in the Backup tab-> List Jobs. Click on the report icon across the corresponding backup job and take a screenshot after expanding the latest incremental backup.
