With the new release of Vembu BDR 2.1.0, VHDX, the second generation VHD format is supported by BDR. VHDX not only improves the quality and stability of backup data but also supports backup of disk size up to 64 TB. The native format of VHD support on the other hand, is limited to a maximum size of 2TB.

Apart from Increased Disk Size, there are several other advantages. They are:

  • VHDX format prevents corruption of disks due to sudden power down of machines by storing log details of the current session.
  • VHDX supports the creation of differential disks where disk size can be increased by attaching additional VHDs or by using VHD files that increase in size over period.

The brand new VHDX format is supported by Hyper-V server 2012. Support for older versions of Windows is currently unavailable. However, you can convert VHD into VHDX quite easily in Windows 2012, which is a major advantage.
