It is necessary to have an option to store the backed up data in multiple place. At any time you can change the backup location without worrying about the previously backed up data. If current backup location or volume is full, the backups will automatically go to next backup location i.e to next storage volume which selected. So no one has to keep monitoring the backup location of the backup server when it is almost nearing the drive capacity.

It was designed like it is enough to verify your backup server periodically but it is not necessary to monitor your backup server all the time. Whenever you see your backup server’s current location is nearing its capacity(say 80% disk full), then you can add one more volume to the storage volume. In this case if the current backup location is filled, then backup will automatically go to next volume that is selected in the storage volume.
